Adrian Pasdar is so unfairly pretty. I mean, drop dead gorgeous. Especially when slightly dishevelled. Nathan and Claire starting to work it all out was lovely. Sylar is actually kind of interesting again, which is a nice change.

I have about 5 loads of washing up to do today. My current flatmate is appallingly lazy, and thankfully moving out at the end of the week. I want J to get a job and come back to me! Then I have to go and summarise 4 chapters about IHRM. This is not shaping up to be a great day.

This weekend will be better. I'm going to the coast to see my grandparents and my sister, and Mum may or may not be coming down for visits. That would be fantastic.

Er, yes, you can still be misogynist if you are a lesbian. If straight men can hate women and still want to sleep with them, why wouldn't you be able to?

I think Turnbull is going to tank soon. His numbers just keep getting worse and worse, he may yet beat Brendan Nelson. I think it is a safe guess that Costello will step in when the time comes, which wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. As conservatives go, he is quite moderate.

So we may have another bikie war in Australia. That is just what we need. Actually, what Victoria really needs is its own Fitzgerald Inquiry to deal with some of the rife corruption.

Gen Y is not actually at fault because they have never experienced a recession before now. They are not actually to blame for the prosperity of the fairly recent past. Hell, the less economically aware ones wouldn't even realise that said recent prosperity wasn't actually abnormal. Furthermore, give us a little credit, please. We adapt, it's what we do.

C leaves for Japan tonight. I won't see her again until August. I do not like this at all.

This is not the well thought out opinion I promised earlier. The Courier Mail has not published anything to get my hackles up so far today, and I refuse to read the comments because they just make me weep for humanity. Scary, racist, sexist, stupid humanity. No, this post is a simple statement of fact.

The Government is not lying to us! We actually are not in a recession! If you are going to spend 30 minuted ranting at me about how it is all Kevin Rudd's fault, at least get the very basic facts of your argument right. A recession is 2 quarters of negative growth. What we are experiencing is an economic slow down, out economy is not growing as fast as it was. Admittedly, it acts a lot like a recession, but this does not make it one. It is not surprising. Even without the financial crisis, we were well overdue for this. Our economy has been growing ridiculously fast for a bit over a decade. Also, the slow down is a result of numerous factors, Labor's fiscal policy is but a drop in a bucket. Howard's policy has had a bigger impact, Bush's policy much more still. This is not a simple problem, it does not have a simple solution. To suggest that it does shows a deep misunderstanding of how the economy works. This is a global problem, all our current government can do is try to minimise the damage. Our economy is simply not strong enough to remain independent of the global climate. Only complete isolationism could achieve that, and that is not a road we really want to go down.

Okay, maybe that was a bit of an opinion by the end there.
2nd-Oct-2008 12:53 am - Still no fires...
appalling_cynicism: (A splash of colour on a rainy day)
I ♥ you, Ronan Lee! It is kind of extremely gratifying when the State MP you voted for publicly raises some of the issues that concern you. I know he didn't really do anything, but given how incredibly rare it is for a State MP to even say something, I will take it as a small victory.

May I offer as a good, clear, entertaining explanation of the economic crisis? My thoughts are cut because they are whingy, ranty, and about the economy. These are not the things good LJ entries are made of. Okay, maybe that's only true of the 'economy' part... )

Erm, to make up for that, I offer picspam.

Vera Lynn, Forces Sweetheart of WW2 )

I also offer A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square and We'll Meet Again by the lovely Vera Lynn.
30th-Sep-2008 04:50 pm - Quizzes, memes, and a paid account
appalling_cynicism: (The solution to life's problems)
I caved. While it was on sale, I bought a paid account so I could have shiny, shiny icons. I am okay with this. It distracts me from panicking about the global economy's imminent demise. This is what happens when you give credit to everyone with a name! You find that, oops, some of these people borrowed more than they stand any chance of being able to pay back. Somehow, I thought global disaster would be accompanied by more random fires.

Also, to distract myself, quiz!

I am, of course, none other than blank verse.
I don't know where I'm going, yes, quite right;
And when I get there (if I ever do)
I might not recognise it. So? Your point?
Why should I have a destination set?
I'm relatively happy as I am,
And wouldn't want to be forever aimed
Towards some future path or special goal.
It's not to do with laziness, as such.
It's just that one the whole I'd rather not
Be bothered - so I drift contentedly;
An underrated way of life, I find.
What Poetry Form Are You?

And, meme!

Tell your name, then write five sentences about yourself. Maybe your favorite things, what you did today, what you're doing tomorrow, the weird habits you have, the languages you speak, anything.

Then say two or three sentences about me. Anything you like.

If you haven't, post this too.
15th-Sep-2008 12:32 am - Reasons to not be a student
appalling_cynicism: (Whittling time away)
Why is everyone up in arms about the single old age pension, but the fact I can barely make ends meet despite youth allowance and as much work as I can fit around uni is perfectly okay? I don't go out, I don't drink, I don't smoke or do drugs, I buy my food as cheaply as possible, but still I can not save anything and occasionally spend weeks on end eating nothing but generic 2 minute noodles. But this is acceptable, because living below the poverty line as a student is character building?

I am really sick of uni and being a student. I know I'll probably miss it when it is gone, but right now I just want to do something else. I've been doing this for almost 4 years and it is really getting old. Also, I am so sick of being poor. I know that sounds ridiculous, but I would love to just be able to buy food without having to worry about rent. I would love to have access to meat more often. Hell, the only reason I get fruit and vege is because I buy it at the markets. I just wish money, or, rather, the lack of it, weren't always hanging over me.

After the James Marsden picspam that will be posted in the next few days, the will be Lee Pace. I may have watched all 9 episodes of Pushing Daisies instead of sleeping last night and have re-discovered his prettiness.
