appalling_cynicism: (The sun after the shadowlands)
I went out to brunch with a big group of friends and friends-of-friends this morning. I just have one thing to say - the next person who says that "they're European and speak a bajillion languages and seriously, learning kanji can't be that difficult" dies. Learning kanji is not like learning a European language, the are fricking ideograms with different readings and different meanings in different contexts. So piss off and stop assuming I am just an idiot.

Essay is almost done. I can't find any resources about corporate re-structuring though, so I'm going to leave it for a while and come back to it.

M*A*S*H is so much better with the laugh track off. I just wish they hadn't screwed us so much with the DVDs. I bought all the seasons separately and special feature-less, but now for slightly less than what I paid there is a lovely box set with special features. Uncool, M*A*S*H. I stand by my claim that Trapper is one of the most interesting characters on the show. Most fans disagree, obviously Hawkeye is, but I think Trapper has a lot more depth than fandom gives him credit for.

Oh, would you look at that. Cardinal Pell has come out supporting the Pope's 'condoms make the AIDS crisis worse' claim. Catholicism, sometimes you seriously fail. Like a lot. Also, this is an interesting read. It's about the actual environmental impact of farming v the perceived environmental impact. It has a very bad reputation in Australia, and I would assume in a lot of other countries as well.
31st-May-2008 05:16 pm - I really am lucky that I don't have all the power in the world so I can't fuck everything else up.

Stitching Leggings by Kate Nash is my anthem at the moment. It is about the most positive I can bring myself to be.

My brain is about ready to hand in its resignation at the moment. All this reading about the oil and gas industry has left me feeling incredibly frustrated and miserable. I've been terrified of global warming since I was about 9 years old and BTN had a piece about it. So what this assignment has taught me is that at the tender age of 9, I was more intelligent than the large portion of the industry that is about to get screwed over royally in return for screwing everyone else over royally.

Also, women out there. Get angry, dammit. I know it's hard, but it's necessary. Apathy will get us nowhere. If someone calls you or someone you love by a misogynistic name, get upset. I don't care that you aren't particularly offended, you should be. Be offended of behalf of the rest of us, because it's our problem too. Those little things that don't seem to matter really, truly do, because they are part of something so much bigger.

Now I've got that off my chest, a rec. Lipstick by [ profile] entangled_now is Sam/Chris, and easily my favourite Life on Mars fic out there. It's very bittersweet and beautiful, and leaves me just the right amount of wibbly.

Summary Some things are never entirely unexpected.
31st-May-2008 05:13 pm - Animal rights
appalling_cynicism: (I'd pay to see that)
I do not believe that an animal life and a human life are equal. I do, however, believe that animals should not be subject to any unnecessary pain or suffering. Their lives do have value. I am not a vegan, or even a vegetarian. I believe fur is cruel, but arguments could be made in favour of leather. In short, I am a bundle of contradictions all wrapped up in a relatively attractive package.

All of that being said, I believe that kangaroo culling is the right thing to do. There is not enough food for the current population, they will starve to death. It would be cruel to leave them suffer, when an overdose of sedatives and barbiturates would be quick and painless. On a related note, I do not agree with the killing of sharks that attack people. Actually, I'll extend that to any wild animal that attacks a person in the wild. I'm not saying the person deserves to be attacked, but the animal sure as hell does not deserve to be killed.
